Forklift CDL Training In Clayton, New Jersey

Many jobs in the trucking industry require employees to know how to safely load and unload containers. At Mike’s Driving School, Inc., students can become certified forklift drivers while pursuing their Class A or B Commercial Driver License in a CDL course. Located in Clayton, New Jersey, Mike’s Driving School offers CDL school courses and standalone forklift operator training classes.

Forklift Operator Requirements

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets the rules and requirements for forklift operators. Also known as powered industrial trucks, forklifts are used in many different industries to move heave materials often stacked on wooden pallets. To drive a forklift in the workplace, an individual must hold an OSHA-approved certification proving they have been trained in proper forklift operation. This training includes topics such as:

  • Steering
  • Vehicle capacity and stability
  • Truck instrumentation and controls
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance
  • Workplace environmental conditions

To meet OSHA regulations, a student’s certification card will include:

  • The operator name
  • The date they were trained
  • The date they were evaluated
  • The name of the person who performed the training or evaluation

Available Courses

At Mike’s Driving School, we offer multiple training programs for students wishing to pursue a Class A or B CDL. Students can choose a course that includes a forklift training component to enhance their skill set or enroll in a standalone forklift certification course.

Forklift OSHA Certification

Learn to operate a forklift in this eight-hour training program. The Forklift OSHA Certification includes the following components:

  • Classroom instruction: Students will learn the OSHA rules and regulations for powered industrial trucks.
  • Yard skills: Students will get hands-on practice in our tractor-trailer training yard, learning to safely operate a forklift including moving and stacking pallets.

After successfully completing the OSHA test for Powered Industrial Trucks, students will receive an OSHA-approved wallet card and certificate. Course completion requires a 100% attendance rate. The Forklift OSHA Certification course runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; course dates vary.

Advanced Class A with Forklift

This 200-hour course prepares students to pursue a Class A CDL and provides a supplemental forklift operator certification. The Advanced Class A with Forklift course includes classroom instruction, skill development in our tractor-trailer training yard, and practice out in the field. Students will learn the skills they need for the CDL Class A written test and skills test, such as:

  • Hours of service rules
  • How to test air brakes
  • Parallel parking
  • Straight line and offset backing
  • How to operate a double-clutch
  • How to properly shift an asynchronous transmission
  • How to perform an alley dock maneuver
  • Proper driving on highways, rural routes, and city roads

Students will also learn proper forklift operation and will earn their forklift OSHA card after completing the course. This course runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday times are also available for students who cannot attend classes on weekdays.

Advanced Class B Straight Truck with Forklift

In this course, students learn the required skills to earn a Class B CDL as well as forklift certification. With a combination  of in-class instruction and practice in the straight truck training yard and on real roads, students will learn:

  • Air brake systems and operation
  • Hours of service rules for logbooks and eLogs
  • Proper in-cab inspection
  • Straight-line back and offset back maneuvers
  • Parallel parking
  • How to turn wide
  • How to drive on rural and city roads, as well as highways
  • Forklift operation for OSHA certification

This course includes 128 hours of training also runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Upon completion of the course, students will obtain an OSHA-approved pocket card for forklift operation.
